This poor car can’t catch a break. I hit a small piece of retread that flew up and almost dodged it....until I didn’t. The support that the plastic insert attaches onto is busted. Sooooooo yeah, I need a whole new front bumper again.
I don’t want to go through insurance if I have to pay the deductible since it’s probably going to be not much more than the deductible, but I can’t figure out what agency to report the incident to, in case they do track down the truck that released it. And it damaged multiple cars so I know it happened not long before I passed through and someone is going to try and not be on the hook for having their hood smashed by the carcass.
Anyone been in this situation? It’s not a rush in the car repair sense. This is minor in the grand scheme of things.

I feel like retreads should be stamped with unique IDs and registered to the vehicle they are put on so they can be held accountable.
I hit one once, but it just left some scratches I could live with:

Agreed! The truck drove off so I left a message with state police since it happened on a state highway. But it would be a lot easier if the retread had some ID on it so we could prove we weren’t at fault.

I keep a high deductible because I do everything in my power not to use it. With bodywork it’s tough though because it’s MF expensive to get it done right.
So I’m for the DIY method if you can buy a pre-
painted bumper. If not I’d take it to a body shop then take it up the butt from the bill.
I’d expect to pay in the 1k neighborhood for a bumper install and paint.
Also, fuck retreads as FACW said drivers/companies should be held accountable.

Last time, the bumper+paint+install was actually a touch under 1k, so not too bad. But I might try to DIY it a bit since I don’t like the idea of scrapping the whole bumper for that small amount of damage. I know it has other scratches and damage, but it’s a daily driver so I know better than to worry about it being perfect 24/7.

Totally get that. The bumper on the M3 is far from perfect, but if I fix it I want to kick myself the first time it gets a chip. W hich will happen bein g a front bumper and all, haha.

I ended up making a claim after a lot of hesitation, and was glad that I did because in the end they found a cracked radiator mount and dent ed A/C compressor, so it was well over my deductible.

Time to hack those black slats out of there and replace them with a FMIC.

Now it’s got character. Just drive it as is.

TBH looks like you could just pop on a new black piece on there and be good.

You’re absolutely right. At first I thought there was a straight plastic beam to support the insert, but it is just a bunch of tabs. Th e part is 25$.

The intercooler doesn’t require a tune and doesn’t change the power curve. It just will have winter power during the summer. The intercooler was the second best mod I did, behind the RMM.
